FAQ’s and Common Myths

“The Stop Smoking Wales Advisor was extremely knowledgeable and I would highly recommend the service to anyone who wanted to give up smoking.”Q - Will I get patches when I attend?

A - We are not able to provide or prescribe medicines at the group sessions. Once you have attended the Assessment Session and are ready to stop, your Advisor can provide you with a letter to your GP or local pharmacist so you can get your nicotine replacement therapy. Alternatively we can provide you with a letter to your GP to let him know you are interested in either Zyban™ or Champix™.

Q - Why do I have to attend each week?

A - The 6 week programme will not only give you information about medicines to help you stop smoking but help you to learn how to manage your cravings and change your habits to stay stopped. Our research shows that if you only attend one of the six sessions your chances of successfully quitting falls to 20%.
If you attend all six sessions your chances of quitting smoking rise to 85%.

Q - What if I am not ready to stop?

A - If you attend the Assessment Session and feel this is not the right time to try to stop smoking you can contact the Service again when you are ready. We suggest that six months can be a good period of time to get re-motivated and give it a go again.

Q - I don't know if I would find a group helpful. Can I see an Advisor 1-to-1?

A - If you wish to see an Avisor 1-to-1 this can be discussed. We try to arrange 1-to-1's for pregnant smokers, those who will be having an operation, young people and those who may not find a group session suitable.

Q - I am taking tablets for a health condition - will I still be able to use nicotine replacement therapy?

A - As we won't have access to your medical records we won't be able to make an assessment of any potential contraindications with medicines to help you stop smoking. We will refer you back to your GP to ensure there aren't any problems.
