Group Support Programme

“The overall sessions were really good and helpful. The leaflets are still on my fridge as a reminder. Carbon Monoxide testing is good as it reassures that you are doing well (keeps you motivated). I would recommend this service to anybody.”(Female 35 years)When you make an appointment to attend a Stop Smoking Wales group support programme, you will be joining a group of other smokers who want to stop smoking just like you. Every group is led by a trained Advisor to support and encourage you through the programme.

6 Week Support Sessions

The Stop Smoking Wales group support programme consists of an assessment session followed by six weekly behavioural support sessions. Here is an outline of what you can expect from each session:

Assessment Session

Client 2At this session you will be welcomed to the group and you will confirm your commitment to the course. You will hear about the benefits of quitting with Stop Smoking Wales and the importance of intensive behavioural support. You will be provided with information on nicotine replacement therapy (e.g. patches and gum) and other treatment aids. You will be introduced to carbon monoxide monitoring which will monitor your progress and motivate you to stay stopped.

A carbon monoxide (CO) monitor measures the small amount of CO in the air you breathe out. CO is a poisonous gas which is inhaled when you smoke. The test only takes about 30 seconds and can show you how quickly CO leaves your body when you do stop. It only takes about 24 hours!

Session 1

At this session you will be able to discuss your feelings about quitting smoking with other members of the group and will learn more about the benefits of quitting as a group. This session will help to prepare you to quit smoking and will look at withdrawal and coping mechanisms to prepare you - followed by carbon monoxide testing.

Sessions 2-5

By session two you will have quit smoking. During sessions two to five there will be an opportunity to discuss withdrawal symptoms, ways to cope with difficult situations, maintaining motivation to quit smoking, stop smoking aids and carbon monoxide testing.

Session 6

The focus of session six is to help you stay stopped. You will have the opportunity to look back at the progress you have made over the six weeks and will receive advice on how to prevent you from going back to smoking. Carbon monoxide levels will be monitored.
