Staying Stopped

“Just thought the whole stop smoking package was brilliant, I can now say I am a non-smoker. Yippee!! Stop Smoking Wales definitely rocks for me. Haven’t had a ciggie since day I went. Thank you so Much! *****You have managed to stop smoking and are feeling quite confident. Congratulations!

However it's important to remember that this is not the end of your journey. When you least expect it you may feel an urge to smoke. You may be able to prepare for these situations before they happen.

Arguments with family or friends, stress at work or bereavement are all linked to returning to smoking. Being aware of these situations and planning coping strategies can mean the difference between returning to regular smoking and sucessfully quitting smoking.

What can you do?

  • Identify your risky situations before they happen
  • Plan how you will cope - think of the things you can do when a difficult situation arises
  • Try to remember what you are going to do and practice doing it. This way you'll find you react automatically

Here are some examples of common triggers along with some suggestions of how you might deal with them. You might have some ideas of your own about how to cope with these situations

Situation

Our Suggestion

What to Remember

 What to Do

Getting bad news

Smoking will not change the bad news nor will it cure any problems, it will only add to them

Have a good cry or talk to someone. Make time for yourself

After an argument

You can cope with this situation without smoking

Get away from the problem for a few minutes; take five deep breaths, relax,go for a walk

Being with smokers

Deep down they wish they could quit too

Try not to have a single puff of a cigarette

 Having a drink

You can learn to enjoy a drink without smoking

Keep your hands busy; play with your keys

Feeling very confident? You may feel tempted you want to test yourself. Never think that you can have just one puff of a single cigarette! it's a big risk. you have come a long way and just one puff on a cigarette can lead you back to regular smoking again by reawakening the nicotine receptors in your body.

With our support you won't give up on giving up. Call our free helpline on 0800 085 2219 to speak to one of our friendly advisors about Stop Smoking Wales group sessions.
